Anencephaly

One of the most common and yet most serious forms of birth defects is anencephaly, a type of neural tube defect in which a child is missing portions of the brain or skull.

The neural tube is a fetal structure that forms during pregnancy, eventually developing into the brain, skull and spine. Anencephaly occurs when the upper portion of the neural tube (the cephalic portion), does not close fully during pregnancy. As a result, the child may be born missing all or part of the brain or skull. Children may be born without the forebrain and cerebrum; the remaining portions of the brain may not be covered by bone or skin. Facial abnormalities or heart defects may also be present.

Because of the severity of the birth defects caused by anencephaly, most babies born with this condition die within a few days of birth. Since there is no known treatment for anencephaly, prevention of the disease is essential.

Although scientists are unsure of the precise cause of anencephaly, studies have shown that women who receive normal amounts of folic acid in their diet are 50% less likely to give birth to a child with the condition. Genetic or environmental factors—including the use of epilepsy drugs such as Depakote during pregnancy—may also increase the risk of the condition.

If you or a loved one took Depakote while pregnant and gave birth to a child with anencephaly or other neural tube defects, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit.
